As extreme weather events are becoming more common across the country, Iowa is seeing some of that impact as well. This session will examine what extreme weather and emergency management systems work across the state and discuss if they are still adequate. The panelists will discuss how the state of Iowa, counties and cities can strengthen their extreme weather response plans to better prepare and serve Iowans.

Nuclear and Hydrogen Power in Iowa
Iowa’s only nuclear power plant is well on its way to restarting, while companies are setting up exploratory mines to determine whether they can harvest enough hydrogen from Iowa’s hydrogen-rich geological formations. We’ll explore what’s fueling these pushes and what and where exploration is happening and what it could mean for the environment and landowners.

Radon: What is it and what can it do to me?
Iowa has the highest average radon concentrations in the United States, with more than half of Iowa homes above EPA-determined safe levels. We’ll talk about what Radon is, the impacts on humans, ties to cancer rates and what you can do to monitor for it. We’ll also look at the regulatory environment and explore how to know if remediation tools are working.

Over the past year, much of the country has seen a data center boom, with more land being diverted to build the large centers. What does that impact look like for Iowa? How are the current data centers and the centers that are set to break ground going to impact Iowa’s water quality and quantity, Iowa’s workforce and how will it strain Iowa’s electric grid?

With the release of the Central Iowa Source Water Resource Assessment – or the CISWRA –report in 2025, water quality has become even more top of mind for Iowans. But how can Iowa clean up its dirty water? Panelists discuss the different ways the state, groups and Iowans can work to clean up Iowa’s water through nitrate removal systems, stronger agriculture policy, implementing oxbows and bioreactors and beyond. What is the best way forward?
